B.L.I.S.S. Intensive Blog 3: Identify What or Who Is Holding You Back
What’s Stopping You?
Patricia Jo Grover, like many of us, had moments in life where she felt stuck. She had big dreams, but something—or someone—was holding her back. Maybe it was fear of failure, maybe it was limiting beliefs, or maybe it was certain people in her life who didn’t support her growth.
Here’s the truth: We all have obstacles that hold us back. Sometimes, they’re obvious—like a toxic relationship or a lack of resources. Other times, they’re hidden—like self-doubt, procrastination, or a fear of stepping outside our comfort zone.
But here’s the good news: Once you identify what’s holding you back, you can take control and move forward.
This blog will help you:
- Uncover the internal and external barriers blocking your success
- Recognize the people or habits that are limiting your growth
- Develop a plan to break free and move forward with confidence
By the end, you’ll have clarity on what’s been holding you back—and a strategy to overcome it.
What’s Holding You Back? Internal vs. External Barriers
1. Internal Barriers: The Invisible Chains
Sometimes, the thing keeping you stuck isn’t outside of you—it’s inside your own mind. These are self-imposed limitations that shape your beliefs, actions, and decisions.
Common Internal Barriers:
- Fear of failure: “What if I try and don’t succeed?”
- Fear of success: “What if I can’t handle success?”
- Imposter syndrome: “I’m not good enough to do this.”
- Procrastination: “I’ll start tomorrow.”
- Lack of confidence: “I don’t have what it takes.”
π How to Overcome Internal Barriers:
- Reframe your thoughts: Every failure is a lesson, not a defeat.
- Challenge negative beliefs: Ask, “Is this actually true, or is this just my fear talking?”
- Use affirmations: Replace self-doubt with empowering beliefs like, “I am capable. I deserve success.”
2. External Barriers: The People and Situations Holding You Back
Sometimes, the obstacle isn’t your mindset—it’s your environment, the people around you, or your circumstances.
Common External Barriers:
- Toxic relationships: People who criticize, discourage, or make you doubt yourself.
- Negative work environments: A job that drains your energy or prevents growth.
- Lack of resources: Financial struggles, lack of support, or limited opportunities.
- Unhealthy habits: A routine that doesn’t align with your goals.
π How to Overcome External Barriers:
- Evaluate your circle: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support your goals.
- Set boundaries: Limit time with those who drain your energy or discourage your dreams.
- Take control of your environment: If your surroundings don’t support your growth, change them.
Who in Your Life is Holding You Back?
Not everyone in your life is meant to stay in your journey forever. Some people help you grow, while others keep you stuck in place—or worse, pull you backward.
1. The Doubters
These are the people who say:
❌ “Are you sure you can do this?”
❌ “That’s risky… maybe you should stick to what you know.”
❌ “That’s not realistic.”
What to do:
- Recognize that their doubts are a reflection of their own fears, not your reality.
- Limit how much you share with them—protect your dreams.
2. The Energy Vampires
These people drain your energy, time, and motivation. They might be constantly negative, overly dependent, or dramatic.
What to do:
- Set firm boundaries on how much time and energy you give them.
- Surround yourself with people who motivate and uplift you instead.
3. The Comfortable Crowd
These are the people who want you to stay the same because change makes them uncomfortable. They don’t want to grow, so they don’t want you to either.
What to do:
- Recognize when someone isn’t supporting your growth.
- Seek out people who are ambitious and driven—people who challenge you to grow.
Reader Exercise: The "What's Holding Me Back?" Reflection
Step 1: Identify Your Barriers
Take a notebook and write down:
- What are the top 3 things holding me back from success?
- Are these internal (self-doubt, fear) or external (people, environment)?
Step 2: Identify the People in Your Life
- Who supports me and my growth?
- Who doubts me or discourages my progress?
- Who drains my energy?
- Who inspires me to be better?
Step 3: Take Action
- For internal barriers: Challenge limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering thoughts.
- For external barriers: Set boundaries, make changes to your environment, and seek support from the right people.
The goal? To remove what’s holding you back and create space for the life you deserve.
